De Londense boekhandel Black Books wordt geëxploiteerd door de sacrastische en norse Ierse zuiplap Bernard Black. Zijn enige personeelslid is de naïeve en ietwat schuchtere Manny. Manny woont bij Bernard in nadat hij deze tegen zijn zin, maar na andringen van zijn buurvrouw Fran, heeft aangenomen. Fran is eigenaresse van een curiositeiten winkeltje naast Bernhard's boekhandel. Ze is het enige maatje van Bernhard. Want net zoals Bernhard drinkt en rookt ze wanneer de gelegenheid dit toelaat.
